Forum format
-
Why not have a forum that looks more like a typical forum? Like an Invision board or V-bulletin? I just prefer those forums and find them easier to negotiate.
-
Again I ask, are you sure you’re in the right forum? Have you read the thread marked “Read Me First?”
-
take it easy raincoaster. I think bobtailcat is saying the he/she would be so glad to take on all the work from the forums >;>
-
-
eheehhehe
when someone is criticizing the work of others must only be ’cause they are saying they can and will do better.
and that is worth it… specially coming from someone that can’t even find the Read me First thread ;) -
Like others I inhabit invision and phpbb forums. When I come here, do I miss:
huge image sigs
stars under my name
number of posts under my name
some witty description of my status under my name
an animated gif under my name
really tiny little icons to move around
quote / quick quote / reply / quick reply
lots of forums and subforums because the license cost so much they may as make more
list of who is online
user counts
forum count (see above)
little flashing icons that show new topics
messaging
waiting times for the software to load each page
and the numerous security upgrades that happen to the other big forum softwaresDo I miss all that? No. Not by a long way.

I find the format confusing. It’s a suggestion – there’s no need to get all defensive. Those forums are popular because they’re user-friendly. This sort of set up is not my cup of tea and I can imagine a lot of people don’t like it, not just me.
I don’t think V-bulletin and Invision require that much more moderation than this setup – it depends on the moderator as to what kind of moderation they want to do. Basically the posts will have the same content but navigation is easier.
I posted a question when I joined and because I’m not familiar with feeds etc, I lost that thread.
With Invision etc, I could do a search on my name, subscription list etc.
-
I have a blog hosted here at WP.COM. I don’t understand why you assume it’s on WP.org???? Strange.
-
Why? Because we get a ton of wp.org questions on the wp.com forums because people don’t realize they’re not the same thing.
That and your blog isn’t linked to your username so it’s hard to see at a glance if you’ve got a blog here.
And yes, we could open up a new tab/window type in “http://yourusername.wordpress.com” but some people’s blog addresses (like mine) have nothing to do with their usernames.

@Mark
I cannot express in words how strongly I identify with every word of your post above. You said it all for me. *ROTFMAO*@bobtailcat
Most new bloggers here at wp.com don’t spend a great of time on the forum asking questions or suggesting improvements. They are here to blog. Once they have located the basic resources they become self-sufficient very quickly https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280 -

Click on the word “member” next to your username.
VOILA! you will find every post you have made to this forum. -
I run a forum on phpbb and while I love it and the facilities it offers, I love BBPress for what it is. It’s simple and it does the job.
It took me a while to get used to, but once it “clicks” you’ll find it get much easier. :) If you want I could point you in the direction of some REALLY bad forum software!
Oh, and it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever see anything like VB or phpbb here. Matt developed BBPress so it sits firmly in the Automattic family. Therefore, anything running in the Automattic family will run BBPress.
-
@bobtailcat – I wasn’t being defensive.
Before I used WordPress I installed and linked miniBB which is on what bbPress was initially based. I really did not like phpbb and others.
What I also want from a forum is information. I don’t want clutter. I want to find what I want fast.
I find that other forum software focuses more on throwing additional information in which is distracting and confusing. It’s also a reason why we don’t have or want sigs. -
and this forum is here to help and give information. and it has all functionalities it needs to do that, if only people try to put them to use.
why is there a need to clutter when something is working fine? -
*cough* a list of the user’s blogs on the profile page for the moderators *cough*

Actually, it would be useful to see who else was online, if only so we don’t rush the same threads all at once. And I still don’t see why the absence of cruft prevents these forums looking a bit more like actual forums, as opposed to a lazy copy of the news blog.
Also, I would love to know what ‘Key Master’ is if not ‘some witty description of my status under my name’. The inability to determine our own descriptions is precisely why some of us have had to resort to writing stuff in our avatars. (Isn’t it ever so slightly inconsistent with the minimalist ethos than we have avatars, by the way? Back on wordpress.org, I seem to remember them getting lumped in with all those other evil pieces of forum bloat.)
-
I don’t agree with those who said that these forums V-bulletin etc look cluttered. Given that it’s not really a social forum, I doubt many members are going to put sigs and avatars. I am a member of another help forum (for mac computers) which is V-bulletin and the vast majority of members don’t add those things. And those things can be turned off anyway. The Mac forums look clean uncluttered and are very functional. There are categories as well which makes it easier to browse and the subscription feature is very helpful. And you can subscribe to threads that have been started by other members. There’s no need to add the RSS feed which can clutter up the browser window if you have asked many questions in the forum and want to track them, you just go to your CPI and find all the info you want.
As I said, there’s a reason why those forum formats (V-bulletin, Invision) are popular. They are user-friendly and easy to navigate. I am trying to be helpful by giving feedback as a member. There is no need to be snooty and make snide comments about members being in the wrong forum and so on.
And as drmike said, mods could have found the list of blogs under member’s name if they thought the person was at the wrong forum.
