Forum improvements

    Hi,

I got two ideas I think would make the forum a better place (at least for the people helping other people out).

1 – if you’ve been helping out a bit on the forum, you know all those repeat questions like “delete site now”, or “wp-plugin not working” or “start over”. Maybe you’ve made your own answer templates for these, but you still have to find them wherever you have them, copy and paste everything (oops, I forgot the dot at the end again…), bold out what you want to emphasize and make sure all the links are actually linked to the correct location. I’m not sure how difficult this would be technically, but what if you had a drop down menu in the forum post editor window called “Template answers”? Here you could make and edit your own templates, and whenever a person wanted to “delete site now =#!”, you could simply choose the correct template answer and your beautiful crafted answer would appear (with all the right text formatting and linking working correctly). To me, that would be a big timesaver, and more people could be helped faster.

2 – the second improvement suggestion is in regards to the Favorites tab on your Forum Profile, where all your favorite threads are stored. Oftentimes, these threads have misleading names made by the original poster, or they might be very generic. All of this making it harder to find the one you’re looking for when you need it. Wouldn’t it be great if you could also edit the names of the threads just for you, so instead of the thread being called “Help!”, you could change it to “the one with the typical domain mapping issue” (or any other name which makes sense to you)?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sounds interesting although I don’t know how easy/difficult it would be to implement.

One thing I would mention is that adding tags to forum threads so far has been the best way to find earlier posts on the same topic and if the answer was yours, you can copy/paste from there. If you are copying someone else’s forum answer, it is polite to quote the answer and link back to the original in your reply.

I know that every volunteer has their own favorite tools. Mine is Evernote where I can change those forum favorites titles and keep snippets of info.

Thanks for bringing this up! :)

Thanks for the advice Jennifer=) I’ll try out the tag technique.

Regarding the copying of someone else’s forum answer: could you perhaps provide an example on how this is done? Truth be told I actually copied one of your answers since I thought it was spot on, but until now I haven’t quoted you since I wasn’t sure of the best way to do it (and if it was normal). Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for asking. If you are quoting someone else’s exact reply, use the QUOTE tag in the row of buttons above the Text box in forum replies and then add a link to the original reply.

So, for example, if I quote you from the recent post on removing premium upgrades, I might say,

    “jjberg83, another forum volunteer, mentioned:

If you have premium upgrades associated to your site, it’s true that you have to remove them before you can delete your site. Check out this link for help for how to delete a site with upgrades.

You can find the original thread/post here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/deleting-account-340?replies=3#post-2863279

Of course, that is just a suggestion. You may do it differently than me. The idea is to credit the person who gave the answer you are quoting as a courtesy. Again, thanks for bringing this up. Much appreciated.

Ok, I see. Thanks for the example. Ironically, I’ll copy this template!
