Forums should display gravatar or public name not login?
-
Would seem odd to show our logins on the forums when everywhere else the system hides that info?
-
Hi. Actually, I think it’s better like this. Otherwise, it would be too easy for ill-intentioned person to spoof the identity of a forum user by changing their displayed name and Gravatar.
-
true, but now a different ill-intentioned person has half the login / password combo. And the WP admins could still have access to to real id underneath.
-
99% of the questions in the forums are answered by volunteers. Volunteers do not have access to account information so we are the ones that will get caught up in any deception that comes along and it could lead to big issues.
Ain’t going to happen.
-
then display the public display name plus the primary blog address – even if it’s a private blog the name should still be displayable. Which would give you a unique key even if someone tried to spoof.
Holes:
person with no primary blog – maybe then show login as last resort.
person being spoofed by someone they share a blog with....is spoofing support really a major issue versus security? What’s the % it would happen (I don’t deny it would, some people are twisted)? Is this something that was tried before?
Versus the well known mistakes average people make with having weak passwords, sharing ids/passwords across many different sites etc?

Spoofing is really a major issue, especially with some sub-groups. It has been such a problem that they disabled editing as well.
