Forwarding Masking kills mobile theme

I have an events website called GMDAevents.wordpress.com, but I purchased a couple of domain names through GoDaddy. I have one set up to Forward with Masking to my website (GreatMindsDrinkAlike.org). However, if I use the GoDaddy domain name in a mobile browser like Safari, it loads what looks like a desktop version of the site but only shows the Header image and title, no home page text at all. This problem doesn’t happen if I go directly to the WordPress domain name. I am using the Bushwick theme, which is extensible and normally quite mobile friendly. Is there a way to fix this or will I have to turn off Masking? (Forwarding alone doesn’t cause this issue). Thanks!

Really? Nobody has any idea about how to fix this?

We do not provide support for forwarding and masking.
We do provide support for domain mapping upgrades.

The mobile theme is a completely different theme than the one on your blog. Use a responsive width theme http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/ and Go to > Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme

Responsive width means the layout adapts depending on the size of the device being used to view your site. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.

I suppose I should have been more clear. I do not have the mobile theme enabled, since Bushwick is responsive. The domain I use to get to the site should not affect how the site formats itself. That’s the problem I’m having.

Sorry but all I know is that we do not provide support for forwarding and masking. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Appreciated time thief. I recognize I may not be able to enable masking, I just wanted to find out if this is a bug or something wrong with my site first.

[removed bump as it pushes the thread further down the queue]

  • Forwarding/masking is going to cause odd issues. The better method would be to set up domain mapping for that domain. Instructions can be found here:

    Map an Existing Domain

Let me know if you have any trouble.

Thanks for the reply rootjosh. I was hoping to find a way to fix this without having to pay for Domain Mapping. Maybe once the group gets up and going I’ll invest a little more into the site.

Out of curiosity, why exactly does masking mess up the responsive theme? (I’ve done some programming and web development, so my technical side wants to know). Thanks!

  • I’m going to guess that iframe masking is being used. And frames have problems being sized properly on mobile devices. If that is because of a frames/browser issue or if the frame/forwarding issue causes the server to not understand that a mobile device is looking at the page, I do not know.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. That makes a lot of sense.

A few other problems with Forward & Mask

The domain that is doing the forward & mask is not really seen by search engines as your blog sends out notification to search engines based on its URL not the domain being mask – so your custom domain will for all purposes not be able to be found with a search engine – so if you give the custom URL to someone – many people put it into a search engine, where it will never be found

And more good news – if a visitor wants to send a link to s specific Post or Page they will not be able to unless they know how to get around the Masking.

All good points. Losing the specific Post or Page is another negative about doing it. I’ll switch it back to forwarding right now.

Mapping an existing domain is the best – see the link above from staff-ozmodiar – the cost is $ 13.- / year

  • Not to sound like a salesman, but Auxclass is right, the $13/yr for domain mapping solves all of these problems.
