Hi, purchased a business a year ago. Just found an abandoned word press site from the previous owner. https://thelocalcp.wordpress.com/
No way to get in touch with previous owner. Need some help getting in so I can take it down. Thank you! Pat (email visible only to moderators and staff)

Only the owner of the site can delete it.

    I recommend trying https://thelocalcp.wordpress.com/contact-us/

We consider the user who registered the site to be its owner, unless that user transfers ownership to someone else, which has not happened in this case.

Hi Pat, since you didn’t create the site, and its previous owner did not transfer ownership of the site to you, my recommendation would be to go ahead and create a new site instead so that it’s clear to any visitors that yours is the real, current site.

You might also want to go through your paperwork to find out if they transferred ownership of any digital properties to you. If they gave you the email address associated with the site, for example, you could use that to regain access.

It seems like everyone here has given up on me. I have all the appropriate documentation to demonstrate that I am the owner of the business.

I am trying to do this the legitimate way. By asking for help at the source.

Looking at the random and inappropriate ads that are now part of the site it seems obvious that it has been hacked. Is there really no way for the wordpress team to help the legitimate owner of a site? Its a fair assumption that looking at the login accounts would show nothing that looks like the email used to create the site.

    Pat

It seems like everyone here has given up on me.

We haven’t given up on you, but as mentioned before, we consider the user who registered the site to be its owner, unless that user transfers ownership to someone else, which has not happened in this case.

You can attempt to recover access to that owner’s account via https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/#account-recovery-form but we can only accept the proofs of identity listed there.

Looking at the random and inappropriate ads that are now part of the site it seems obvious that it has been hacked.

The site has not been hacked, it is simply a free WordPress.com site, and we run ads on free sites to keep them free: https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

Overall, I have to echo my colleague’s recommendation. If you cannot recover access to the account which currently owns the site, we recommend that you create a new site.
