Frames and configuring outbound links

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear WordPress support folks –

I have just added a couple of new “custom” (external) links to my main menu:

    “Discuss”, which goes to: https://www.loomio.org/g/bn0P54Oj/one-global-democracy

    And “Support”, which goes to:
    https://donorbox.org/one-global-democracy-support

If possible, I would prefer not to send my viewers away from my WordPress blog to get to these external pages, so I have two questions:

    1. Is it possible to present these pages within the frame of my WordPress plog (i.e., under the title & menu, and with my recent blog entries & signup box still to the right)?

    2. If frames are not supported, can I configure the outbound links so that they open a new browser tab, rather than navigating away in the current tab?

    Thank you!

    – Peter

    Hi there Peter!

    1. Is it possible to present these pages within the frame of my WordPress plog (i.e., under the title & menu, and with my recent blog entries & signup box still to the right)?

The code to create frames like these are not allowed on WordPress.com sites. While there are ways to embed certain types of files (ie. Google Docs, or Sribd.com docs), the page type you need won’t work.

    2. If frames are not supported, can I configure the outbound links so that they open a new browser tab, rather than navigating away in the current tab?

    Absolutely! Here are the instructions:

If you need assistance with this process, let me know. Thanks much!

Robyn – thanks so much for this help. Is there a way also to configure my site so that all outbound links within my pages open a new tab, by default? If so, how, please? :)

    Hey there, Peter,

Unfortunately, this can only be done manually, per link. If you need help setting these up, let me know!

In case you’d like the how-to steps of creating links that open new tabs:

Section 3 is the area to focus.

    Best to you.
