Fraudulent Account
-
I received a ‘Welcome to WordPress’ email on an email account that is not associated with WordPress, confirming that “my site” is up and running. I did not create this site. I also did not receive any of the usual email verification requests prior to the ‘welcome’ email, but I seem to be receiving all of the following set-up emails… I’d like my email address removed from whatever account that is. Please help?

Good Morning –
If you don’t want this account or the site involved go ahead and shut it all down. Here’s how.
– https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/I highly suggest updating the password to your email account and making sure that you have 2 factor authentication enabled there. You really should have it enabled on all online accounts that offer that feature, WordPress.com does. Every online account needs to have a unique strong password and no two accounts should ever share a password.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

You can ignore the email verification notices that we’ve sent since you don’t want the site.

Hi, thanks for the help. So, you have to be logged in to delete an account. How do I log onto an account that I did not create? I don’t know what the password is. Many thanks

If someone used your email address for the account then you can reset the password and gain access.
Is this the site in question or a different one?

No, it was a different one linked to an account that I was unaware I had! Thank you for your help

Make sure you’re logged out of this account first, then you can use that email address to reset the password at https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword to log into the other account.

Hi there, thanks for the help. I took your advice by changing the password on the other account, and closed it down.
Before this, I had been getting an unusually high amount of emails telling me about updates to a blog that had been subscribed to (roughly 10 per day). This stopped when I closed the account, but today I received another one. How is this possible when the email account it came through to no longer has WordPress? (just to add, I checked the sender email and it was the same as those on the previous ones I had received – all legitimately from WordPress)

Hmm, what’s the email address to which the notification came and what’s the address of the blog you’re supposedly subscribed to?
You can write the email address in its own line, it will be visible only to WordPress.com staff :) -
This is the link to the blog that I’m supposedly subscribed to: https://wp.me/p479G9-1fT
And, here is the link of the other blog that had multiple updates daily: https://wp.me/p3SgXw-bci
As for my email address, do you mean for me to post it here…? Is this not a public forum?
-
Add your email address on its own line, and it will be hidden automatically so only staff can see it.
It’s possible that someone that knows your email is using it to subscribe to sites without using a WordPress.com account, but it’s possible to block it from being used in that way. We’ll just need to make sure that this is indeed the case first.

I see. My email address is as follows:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
Thanks, I look forward to hearing back

Hi there,
I checked and you indeed canceled your WordPress.com account successfully. But, it does look like someone knows your email and is subscribing you to WordPress.com sites through that email.
I am going to send you the link via email of your subscription page where you can unfollow all the remaining blogs connecting to your email as well as block any future sites from connecting to that email. Let me know if you do not see the email.
Thanks!
