  I would like to sign up for a free 1 year account.
  Once I signed up for a plan I was taken to a payment page which said £36. How do I get my free year please?

  It looks like you chose a custom .blog domain for your site. In order to use a custom domain, you must have a paid plan, which is why you have a Personal plan in your shopping cart along with the domain. The domain is free for the first year, then would renew every year thereafter (.blog domains are $22/yr).

  Otherwise, if you want to use the free version of WordPress.com, your site name would stay as makingadifference503273474.wordpress.com.
