You do not have to purchase domain at all. You have a blog here http://fashionisondotnet.wordpress.com/ and you do not need to purchase a single upgrade for it. However, if you want the blog to be on a custom domain, of course that requires a paid upgrade. And if you want to purchase a domain and hide your personal information by having a private registration then yes you do have to pay more for that too.

All free hosted WordPress.com blogs are on .wordpress.com sub-domains like http://fashionisondotnet.wordpress.com/As I said above you do not have to purchase a domain name at all. If you want to do that then read what follows. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

Registering a .com, .org, or .net domain through WordPress.com and mapping that domain to your blog starts at $18.00 per domain and per year, or $25.00 per domain and per year for a .me or .co domain. For $8.00 more, you can also make the domain registration private.
