Free account – need customising

I am trying to build a magazine-type website for a university assignment and I am falling short in editing a variety of items – we don’t have a budget, so what would be our best bet to actually be able to edit a bit more in detail than what is available right now?

well, you could need many things but you would need to describe a bit more in detail what you are looking for in terms of editing.
sometimes the simplest remedy is choosing the right theme, whether free or paid for, because it can include options that other themes do not have. some people only want simple themes for a simple blog site while others try to maximize a free website by using a more involved theme

We want:
– A slider or “featured” articles gallery on the first page = Canard has it, but the images are too spaced out from each other and they appear darker than they are
– The sidebar needs a bit more life and there is no way of customising the way widgets look like = The Instagram one looks like utter crap!
– We’d like to be able to maybe create more types of categories on the front page, like a magazine would have!
– Also, there’s a bit too much space on the sides of the content.I found some way better themes, but I have no idea how to install them, if even possible, to a free wordpress.com account.
