  Are free sites still available? I don’t see that option when starting a site.

  Yes, free sites are still available, but It’s not the most visible choice when you are starting a site. The screenshot at this link should help you find it:
  

  In this example, I chose the word anything to search for domain name suggestions. Whatever search term you use, the screenshot shows where to look for the free option.
