  Registering a domain is optional.

  Free is free and does not require registering a domain.

  When it states free, it’s meaning the “free” domain name and hosting e.g. XXXX.wordpress.com. But when registering a domain name it cost money, there is not such thing as a free domain name anywhere on the net. That’s goes to say for example you would never see a house in the real world for free.
