Where can I find simple instructions for setting up a free wordpress.com site, that don’t direct me to paid features or wordpress.org?

Thank you, magic robot. Yes, I set up a free blog a couple years ago as a demonstration to my students. We get our students to use blogs for some class work, particularly portfolios. It is important that they are able to at least start for free, and my frustration is that help files often end up being about WordPress.org, which requires an annual hosting fee.
I am looking for more comprehensive instructions regarding templates and layouts for a free site, so I can give informed guidance to my students. As I work to customize my example blogs, I am finding the existing videos and instructions are not addressing my questions about format. The new block editor is complicating things, especially because online help seems to go to WordPress.org.
Any ideas, anyone? I’m usually pretty good at figuring out software and instructions. I have reached out after spending a couple of days going around in circles.

I think WordPress.com isn’t really designed for too much customization of themes. Each theme has it’s own set up instructions.
Have you seen: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/ -
Thank you. I have seen the support page that you’ve linked, and it does give comprehensive instructions about the block editor.
I will keep experimenting with my example blog, swimming in circles through the help files, and perhaps I will find clarity…
