Free coffee for "getting started" help

That bag of Kona coffee beans comes once a month. Help me figure this out and get started and I’ll have a bag delivered right to your door anywhere in the US, whole bean or ground. Seriously.

I’m having issues! I have something simple set up that I am puttering around with, but I just can’t seem to get my head around this new technology and get started on the kind of site that I want. It’s like I have this huge mental block preventing me from processing all of this great info. Am I thinking about it wrong? Have I just gotten that stupid over the years? Do I just need to look at it differently?

I was blogging before there was such a thing as blogging. I built a site using Frontpage. It was easy, simple, and, most importantly, I could organize different topics the way that I wanted using a page layout view. By the end (2006 or so), I had hundreds of pages and thousands of columns. Then, the world moved on, the site lapsed, computers changed (PC to Mac), and I got away from it all.

    My site went like this:

Home page, with a side menu that linked you to the children pages

    Children:
About and contact me (static), then…
    Blog
    Personal Essays
    Short stories
    Non-fiction

For each of the children pages, there was the most recent upload and then links to archives for the past ones.

I’m trying to do something like this, though a bit more robust. I’m just really trying to get writing again. I read something about categories instead of pages? I even tried registering Thechrischronicles.com but it came back to me as thechrischroncilesdotcom.wordpress.com?

I’m just looking for a place to hang my hat. Any help to stop me from pounding my head against this technology wall and actually get started again would be greatly appreciated…and rewarded. That Kona coffee is liquid gold.

    Thank you!
    –Chris

Sorry my friend but that made me laugh :)

You’re in the right place, and on the right track … however the coffee bribe won’t work on me as I’m based in SE Asia, and I’m probably too expensive for you anyway :P

Within that, good places to get started on WordPress are :

    Homepage

    Home

The help and support pages on WordPress.com are generally first class, and usually come up in google when searching for this and that.

I don’t think what you’re talking about setting up is terribly difficult. I think probably just write posts, and categorise them “Blog”, “Personal Essays” etc, then setup a custom menu that points to the “category pages”. On my blog I have for instance – http://doncharisma.org/category/design-2/ … which is posts that I’ve put in the category “design”. To learn more about custom menus (for instance) have a look here – https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Hope this helps, and someone takes you up on the coffee !

    Cheers

PS, there’s a support page about category pages here, might help – https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Thanks Don! Glad I made you laugh. I was hoping that the laughter would lead to pity on this poor tech-idiot, but I’ll take what I can get. I’ll check out those links with much appreciation. I have been meaning to get around to learning this for years.

Hey Chris, well it’s a starting point at least … WordPress is pretty easy to learn, persistence and patience is required sometimes … I usually design new sites for clients in WordPress because it’s easy for them to maintain, it’s pretty reliable and extremely customisable and adaptable at very low cost.

Obviously as and when specific questions do arise, and you’ve already looked at the help pages, do leave questions on this forum for us.

    Good luck !

    Cheers

    Don Charisma
