Hi –
You can use the

staff-zinnia Clicking free just takes me through a wizard that prompts me to buy a domain. There’s no option for a *.wordpress.com subdomain.

There’s no option for a *.wordpress.com subdomain
If you picked blog, you’ll see some free blog subdomains in the signup. Note those are free, too, or you can type the exact .wordpress.com address you want and you should have that option.
-
There are no free options – only the registration fee is removed. Each one all down the list still costs $18.

Hi there,
Here is visual instructions on how to create a free
.wordpress.comsite:Step 1: Select email, username, and password.
Step 2: select Blog for a
.home.blogfree site or Business for a.wordpress.comsite.Step 3: Select Topic of your site.
Step 4: Type in Title of site (optional).
Step 5: Type in the full, exact site address you want including the
.wordpress.comor.home.blogsubdomain (ex: freeexamplesite.wordpress.com, freeexampleblog.home.blog). The first option should be the free site that you manually typed in. Click select next to that option.Step 6: At the very top click the link that says: start with a free site.
Then, your site should be created! Please follow those steps and if you have any questions, let us know. Thanks!

I just tried these instructions – and there is no ‘start with a free site’ option. I selected blog, typed in a description of my topic, entered a name and got to step 5. I typed in the exact address – http://www.blogname.wordpress.com – and all that comes up are offers for a free one-year registration if I buy a plan. On neither that page, nor the plan page, is there a free option!

i just went a bit further – i tried every permutation of my proposed blog name with com, blog, work, etc. extensions. None of them are registered or in use – but all I get from wordpress are offers of a free site with a photography extension or I can pay to get com, blog, work, etc. What gives?

@mjp111, I’ve accessed your account to make sure everything is correct. When I follow the steps outlined by staff-doublebassd, I see this:
To clarify how did I get there. When you’re prompted to choose what your site is about, please choose “Business”. After that, whatever available domain name you chose for your site, you’ll see the version with .wordpress.com.
I hope that helps :)
