  When I paid my hosting fee I was told about a free domain name. How do I get that without paying $18? How long is the free domain name available for?

  All WordPress.com blogs are free hosted here on this multiuser blogging platform. The .wordpress.com URLs will exist as long as WordPress.com exists, provided they are not deleted. Deleted URLs are not recycled. http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

  Also note Site titles (Blog Names) and optional Taglines located here > Settings > General can easily be changed at any time.

  Yes. You can change any .wordpress.com sub-domain URL free of charge. See here http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

  I hope you understand that the top level domain here is WordPress.com and all our blogs are on free hosted .wordpress.com sub-domains.

  I think I understand. You are saying that whatever domain name I choose it will read http://xxxxxxxxx.wordpress.com I get to choose what goes where the x’s are.

  That is correct as long as someone did not get there first
