Free Domain name change

If I start building my website with the free domain name given by wordpress, then afterwards when I decide to buy my own domain, will I be able to change my domain name from free one to a new one ?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Yes, you can purchase a domain name and add it to your site anytime. Please note that your site must have a paid plan to set the custom domain as the primary domain as explained here:
