Free domain name on Personal plan
-
When I look to upgrade the website to a Personal plan it seems to indicate that I can get a free domain name when I click on the Information link on the Custom Domain Name option:
Get a free custom domain name (example.com) with this plan to use for your website. Does not apply to premium domains.
However when I go to add a domain name it only indicates it’s included in a Premium plan.
I presume the latter is true but the information link on the Personal plan Custom Domain Name option confuses meThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can use the Personal Plan if all you want is a custom domain, removal of advertising, live chat support and 6GB Storage Space but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.
Go to http://wordpress.com/plans to upgrade.

Just to add on timethief’s comments, custom domain support is available on all plans from WordPress.com Personal plan and above.
When you upgrade from the “Domains” section, you will be asked to upgrade to a WordPress.com Premium plan, instead of a WordPress.com Personal plan – there is no clarity as to why WordPress.com does this.
Although, as timethief suggested, you can visit https://wordpress.com/plans to upgrade your free WordPress.com site to WordPress.com Personal plan, and it should work just fine for custom domain support.
Feel free to get back if you have questions.

That’s exactly my question. Why is Premium added automatically when a free site owner tries to add a domain from the “Domains” section? Even Personal has domain support.

@strikebuys
I don’t know why that is and this not the place to ask such a question. Please go to the other site for Volunteers and Staff and ask there. The bottom line here is that it is what it is and the dialogue between us here is unnecessary and not helpful for the user.
jeff108c needs to know that he must add the plan first.

I hope the following information is useful.
How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping under any upgraded plan (Personal, Premium< Business). That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping, however, you must select a plan before entering a domain URL.
What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
