Free Domain to Custom Domain

I’m thinking about buying a custom domain for my blog (through WordPress hosting), but I’m worried about losing search engine traffic.
Will WordPress automatically redirect traffic from my .wordpress.com domain to the custom domain I create? Or do I need to purchase the site redirect option?

Adding a custom domain to an existing whatever.wordpress.com blog simply makes it so that your blog has TWO valid addresses. You do not need the redirect option because it is the same site.
That said, you will lose search engine traffic in the short run. A subdomain of a huge domain like WordPress.com has more google juice than a whatever.com one. But a custom domain is never the wrong choice in my experience. After three or four months your search engine rankings are back to normal and let’s face it, a custom domain looks a lot more professional and is easier for readers to remember.
