Free forums using bbPress?

I’m trying to create a forum for a group of friends who want to discuss books. That’s it. I don’t want to blog or sell anything or do any of the other things people tend to do with their own websites. Since I already had a WordPress account, and since I read in several places that bbPress was free, I created a page for my book group here and tried to use upload the bbPress plug in onto it. But it doesn’t look like I can if I’m using the free wordpress.com plan–the Plugins page says ‘Upgrade to the Business plan to install plugins.’ In fact, when I went from the ‘plugins’ tab to the ‘plans’ tab, now I see there is no free option, only personal options that start at $4 a month! What’s going on?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

ETA: I don’t know how that last sentence got in there, as it’s an old blog I set up for a library school class.. The blog I’m actually working on–the blog which I’ve just started so I can turn it into a forum–is jenkinsearbookgroup.wordpress.com.

  • Hi there,

If this is for a small, fixed group of people, bbPress is a bit overkill, aside from the fact that you’ll need the Business Plan to install that plugin on a WordPress.com site. (The bbPress software is free, but you’ll still need a hosting account where you can install that software on a server, or as a plugin on a self-hosted WordPress site, or in our case the Business Plan as that’s the only plan that allows installing plugins.)

We have a theme called P2, which was created for the type of discussion you’re describing here. A requirement will be that each participant have a WordPress.com account (which would be the case with bbPress on WordPress.com as well), and will need to be added by an admin before they can post (unlike bbPress where people can add themselves).

You can activate this theme on a free site.

now I see there is no free option, only personal options that start at $4 a month!

That would be because https://jenkinsearbookgroup.wordpress.com/ is already on the free plan.

Adding on top of what kokkieh said. P2 is a brilliant theme for real-time collaboration and discussion. Having been a long time WordPress fan, I know how P2 theme can be very useful, especially with the frontend publishing capabilities. Do give it a try. :)

I will love to instal bbPress in my WP.com site. I’m just waiting for the tool to have members creatingg accounts on my site, not on WP.com, to upgrade. bbPress must be a priority,
