Free install? Can’t get scheduled?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have sent requests for the free install for WordPress, the first time was Tuesday, and then again on Friday. I cannot tell if the request is even being sent, but I haven’t heard anything in the form of a reply.

I have used WordPress on another blog that I’m a contributing writer to for over a year now, and am comfortable and knowledgeable with that setup. I do not know how it was set up, but I know that the blog I’m trying to start now is completely different than the first. A lot of things are not responding the same as I’m used to, i.e. pictures don’t go where I put them, comment link locates just about wherever it feels.

I guess, what I’m saying is, in a word, Help!

    Please.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,
Here’s the bad news – we only provide support on this forum for wordpress.com hosted blogs. This is because this is a wp-MU (multiuser) blogging platform that runs on different software than wordpress.org blogs do. You’ll have to go to http://wordpress.org/support because we can’t help you here.

Also note the change in url for intstall4free it’s now here http://install4free.wordpress.net

If you want a free blog hosted at WordPress.com, just go to http://wordpress.com and sign up for one. Be sure to read the Terms of Service to know what you’re getting into, as it is QUITE different from the software and terms elsewhere.

But, are you saying you already HAVE a blog at WordPress.com? If so, please go to the sticky threads at the top of the forum and click the one marked Frequently Asked Questions. It should get you started.

    @rain
This blogger has an 8 month old wordpress.com blog and I believe he/she wants to move to installing a wordpress.org template and then importing the wordpress.com blog contents into it. The install4free folks are not always instantly available and that’s what I think he’s referring to.

I’m sorry. I’d been up for over 30 hours when I left that email. Let me be a little clearer.

My friend has a blog, for which I also write. I’m quite familiar with blogging on a WordPress blog.

Because I liked the set-up so much, I registered a WordPress blog also, and paid the upgrade to drop the wordpress name from the domain. However, the setup to write is much different than the setup for the one I’ve been writing for for so long. Now, when I write, the pictures that I post do not stay where I put them, and my comments link seems to float around the page, with no clear reason why it’s located where it is.

I’m sure part of my problem is ignorance of code. But I didn’t have to mess with code much unless I copy/pasted from an outside source on the other blog.

Hope this helps a little bit.

But back to the original request. On two separate occasions, I have sent three different messages for the Install4free, to get it scheduled. Only one time was I sure that the request went through, because when I sent the request again, I got a comment about duplicate requests.

So, here I am over a week+ after registering and paying, and I can’t do what I wanted to do with the blog, and I’m having a problem getting help for it.

I want to install the program available at wordpress.org, but I’m completely lost as to what should get uploaded to where. I’ve gone over the instructions so many times, but don’t feel comfortable doing it. I can find my way around my PC in my sleep, and have uploaded hundreds of pics and such to other sites, but pull a complete “Duh” when going over the instructions here.

Hope this helps a little bit. And thanks for the help!

Afraid we really can’t help as wordpress.com is not the same as wordpress.org. And install4free is just a client here and in no way connected with these forums.

Like walking into Burger King and asking for a McDonald’s Big Mac.

Your friend is free to sign up for a blog here at wordpress.com and it’s created during the signup procedure without any installation on their part but if you need help with installing, you need to be over at the wp.org site.

I will mention that the install4free folks (at least some of them at least) do pay attention to those forums as that’s the software that they support.

    Good luck,
    -drmike

Found the right place, sorry to bug so many as I somehow ended up here, rather than there.

    Thanks for the help.

I noticed that install4free had a new url. I’m glad you found the right place. Happy blogging.
