Free or not?

I want to start wordpress for free but I’m already being asked for money. Can I use the free facilities to work out my blog before paying anything?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. They also provide paid upgrades but they aren’t required. Provided you do not provide financial information you can’t be charged for anything.

the new signup page seems to have the upgrades somewhat in your face and confuses many people – as @TT noted above – you can blog for free here http://mindsnapsdotcom.wordpress.com/ – is free and ready to go – just start writing – see above for some quick start links
