  Some domains are indicated as free. But they are asking for card payment and asked me to pay 148$.

  Hi there, the only free domain option available is a WordPressdotcom subdomain like mygroovysite.wordpress.com

  If you wish to use any other domain name, it needs an upgrade Plan. Cost depends on your needs and what Plan you choose. See here for pricing:
