    I registered with wordpress and tried to connect to my domain (owned by me and hosted by Hover) but when I selected the free option I was taken to a page expecting an annual fee. Now I find I’ve been allocated a wordpress domain which is allowing me to start designing a webpage. Is it really possible to have a free option with WordPress using my own domain?

    No it isn’t. If you want to connect your custom domain to your wordpress.com site, you need a paid plan.
