free plan premium template versus personal plan and free template
-
I want to upgrade my wordpress site and currently have a free template and plan, with a domain hosted by GoDaddy. I want to keep my domain name through GoDaddy, since I purchased a multi-year subscription, and I’d like to mask the WordPress SubDomain URL. Does a premium template let me mask the URL or do I need a personal subscription on WordPress to do that?

Hi @flatbedcoffee,
I’m glad you’ve gotten this far in building out your new web solution! Your domain-mapping plan sounds solid. You’ll also get to drop the GoDaddy hosting once your site is launched from WordPress.com.
The short and sweet answer to your question is no, buying a premium theme will not open up the option to set up domain mapping.
Something to consider, if you buy the Premium theme, all of the Premium Themes are available for free: https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2017/03/23/premium-themes-in-the-premium-plan/
That might not make financial sense to you, though, so if not, you’ll have to subscribe to the Personal plan to map the domain, then also buy the Premium theme.

Thanks for your input. So what I’m hearing is that I should purchase a paid plan, rather than a paid template, if I need to map to a different domain. If that’s incorrect, let me know. I appreciate your feedback!

You are correct.
