    Hi!

When you’re creating a new site, at the top of the page that says “Pick a plan that’s right for you”, just underneath that, there’s a link that says “Not sure yet? Start with a free site.”

Click on the pink Start a free site link to choose the free plan.

    Hope that helps!

I click the “start now” and some window flicks up and disappears thru too fast to read, then the paid plans window appears. Alas, no free option there. I’m using Firefox on a laptop

Hey – I thrashed around and eventually found your button. It seems like I went thru the same page several times before it appeared. Now I want a free theme (twenty seventeen) that tells me a need to select “business” but I can’t find anyway to get back there! Can I reset the type of site? Is there some way to just delete what I have and start over? My site name has been entered and I don’t want to lose it.

Glad you were able to start your site.

You should definitely be able to use Twenty Seventeen theme for free.

When you go to Appearance > Themes and have the theme on your screen, click the three little dots next to the name of the theme. A menu will pop up. Click the “Activate” link.

It should activate the theme of your choice and then say “Thanks for choosing Twenty Seventeen”.

    Hope that helps!

Alas, I apparently chose a blog type and twenty-seventeen only loads for business types…and I find no way to go back and change the type.

“at the top of the page that says “Pick a plan that’s right for you”, just underneath that, there’s a link that says “Not sure yet? Start with a free site.”

Could you post that url? I keep getting shuffled off to a screen (goes pages 1 thru 6) with a default format and no way to choose a theme

I didn’t think this would be so hard

Update: I think the answer is a total “No.” When I try to upload theme twenty seventeen I get a message that says “business plan required” and from the rest of the words, I think this is a paid plan. Has twenty-seventeen somehow been switched to paid-only?

OK, so you shouldn’t need to upload a theme, you should just be able to activate it. I activated Twenty Seventeen on 2 free test blogs yesterday with no problem:

    https://yearwithmycamera.wordpress.com/

    https://mydietblog.food.blog/

You can see from the URL for the second blog that it was set up as a blog, so you can totally add the Twenty Seventeen theme to a free blog.

So, once you’ve started your free site, log in to your WordPress.com blue dashboard and go to that site under “My Sites”. Then:

    1. On the left hand menu, go to “Design”.

    2. Click on “Themes”.

    3. In the search bar, search for “Twenty Seventeen”.

    4. In the box, next to the name of the theme, click on the 3 dots.

    5. A menu will pop up. Click on “Activate”.

I made a screenshot with some numbers and arrows to walk you through it. Click on the link below to see it. That is the screen you should be on to activate your theme.
