  please tell me how to create a site for free without connecting to a domain (which I’d need to pay for). I just need to design the site, then I’lll connect it to my domain later.

  You can start a free wordpress.com site here you can use a different domain name than your current domain name

  You do not need to use your current domain name to be able to create a free site. You will be able to transfer your current domain name to wordpress.com at a later time.
