Free site porting

    Hello,

    I am new to building websites and eCommerce sites. I have purchased a domain name with a separate host so that I could secure it. I am now wanting to begin building the site with the free word press subscription however as I have no first hand knowledge of word press I am wondering how I would go about this. I fully understand that there is a steep learning curve and I appreciate that I will face hurdles as I expect this to be a long term project.

    I would just like to understand whether I can build a separate free site for the time being and learn and then later to purchase the premium plan and map my domain.
    This is an issue I have.

    I have tried to look into the difference with letting word press host my website and mapping my domain and I see that I require an upgrade to map the domain. Is this something I am able to do in future.

    This is not entirely concise and I do apologise for this.

    Essentially my question is,

    Can I port over a free skeleton built initial website through upgrading and attaching the externally hosted domain name.

    Hi there!

    Yes, this is possible!

    First, if you haven’t done so already, head to https://wordpress.com/start and set up a new site. You’ll reach a section where you can choose a site address – the first two options at the top are paid plans, but just below them, you’ll see a free option. Select that, and you’ll be able to begin building your site.

    Once your site is ready, you can either transfer your domain to WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    Or map the domain to point to your new WordPress.com site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    You’re able to upgrade your plan at any point, so no worries if you don’t think you’re ready to upgrade just yet. You can build your site for free and upgrade in the future. But it’s true you’ll need to upgrade in order to transfer or map your domain.
