Free-tier website not showing changes made in wordpress.
-
The wordpress twitter team told me to repost my issue here with a #MODLOOK tag to get moderator attention. Here is my issue, and the steps I’ve taken that have failed to fix it.
I created a website using wordpress .COM – It is a “Free tier” website. The theme is: Blank Canvas
The website IS live on the internet but:
Now, when I make changes to existing pages IN wordpress – those changes do NOT show up on my live website. I am NOT trying to change ‘theme’ parameters, I’m just trying to make changes to existing pages. I first tried to add a navigation footer, but the changes didn’t appear on the website. Abandoning that, I tried to just add contact info to the bottom of the landing page – in an ALREADY EXISTING ‘text block’ – I saved and updated the changes, but even that small change did NOT show up on the website.
I know this is a “known issue” for wordpress, but the real frustration set in when I discovered that ALL the suggestions to fix it that I could find in support etc., DO NOT WORK for someone using a ‘free tier’ website.
FIRST – I cleared the “brower cache” on 3 different browsers and tried to make my website changes – that didn’t work. I repeated this on 2 different computers. That didn’t work either
NEXT – the next suggestion was “Clear your wordpress cache” and THIS was especially frustrating.
When I followed the instructions to “Go to settings >> Hosting Configuration >> click ‘Empty Cache'” ALL I found was a page telling me I have to upgrade to a ‘business’ plan to access ANYthing on that panel. There was NO “empty cache” button available to me.
Other solutions to “empty your wordpress cache” ALL required using a 3rd party plug-in that is NOT FREE. I have no plug-ins on this simple site.
ANY other ‘solutions’ I found in the forums seemed to require either a plug-in of some kind or, upgrading to a paid plan – There were NO SOLUTIONS FOR SOMEONE ON THE ‘FREE TIER’ TO CLEAR THEIR WORDPRESS CACHE.
The worst part is: I don’t even know for sure if “clearing my wordpress cache” would even solve my problem.
I’ve been using wp .com for over 10 years. I’ve never run into this issue before, even with the other ‘free tier’ websites I’ve built in my other accounts.
Yesterday I tried contacting support, but the after opening it, the ‘help window’ never loaded… just an endlessly spinning load indicator (I gave up after 10 min)
HOW is is that I can not make even simple changes to what is supposed to be a FREE site without PAYING $ to either upgrade or buy a 3rd party plug-in ?
PLEASE advise.

Hi there –
Thanks for reaching out to us here. We are limited with the help that can be provided through social media.
As I understand things, you aren’t able to see changes made to your site content on the live site. Is that right? Can you share some specific examples for us?
You have purchased a custom domain, but there’s not a hosting plan attached there. That’s what you need in order for your domain visiontherapyunlimited.com to be in communication with the back end of what you’re doing on WordPress.com (editing the content).
I would use the personal plan as a starting point. If you need advanced functionality like scheduling patients or taking payments we would need to make a different consideration of which plan to use. But for the time being, and getting this all squared away, the personal plan will suffice. It’s only $4/month.

Hello Staff-Zinnia thank you for your reply. You asked me to provide “specific examples” of the changes I tried to make, so I am cut/pasting what I wrote in my original post (above) that I guess you didn’t see:
I first tried to add a navigation footer, but the changes didn’t appear on the website. Abandoning that, I tried to just add contact info to the bottom of the landing page – in an ALREADY EXISTING ‘text block’ – I saved and updated the changes, but even that small change did NOT show up on the website.
I have to admit I am SHOCKED to see that your only suggestion for fixing this issue is to upgrade to a paid plan. I have other WordPress accounts with ‘free tier’ websites (that, yes, I purchased a domain name for) and I AM able to make changes in WordPress and see them in the website almost instantly.
My original questions remain:
- HOW do I clear my “wordpress cache” as a free-tier site when the instructions provided by wordpress support only work for paid plans?
- How do I even know if clearing that cache will solve the problem?
- How do I even know if upgrading to a paid plan will solve this problem?
- I STILL do not understand why I am apparently requireed to have a paid plan to make changes to this website – when I CAN make changes to other free-tier websites I admin in other accounts.
I’ll ask again: Please help with these specific issues. There HAS to be a solution, otherwise, what is the point of wordpress even offering a ‘free tier’ at all ??
Standing by for assistance.

Let me clarify this for you. In the past, there used to be an option to purchase a domain-only upgrade and use that domain on WordPress.com. However, this option has not been available for several years now. Nevertheless, any account that already had this upgrade in the past was allowed to continue using this feature. That’s why you were able to add visiontherapyunlimited.com to your site last year.
Usually, when people register a domain name, their intention is to utilize that domain for their website. However, utilizing a domain for your site now necessitates a paid plan, which is why my colleague presented that option to you. I apologize for any confusion that may have arisen.I’ll ask again: Please help with these specific issues.
The issues you’re experiencing are likely related to the theme you’re using, Blank Canvas. This theme functions quite differently from the ones you’re accustomed to on your other sites. It provides a literal blank canvas for building your website and utilizes two separate editors for creating site pages:
- The Site Editor: This editor allows you to make global changes to the theme template, affecting elements like the header, footer, and menu across your entire website and templates for posts, pages, etc.
- The Block Editor: This editor is where you create the content for individual posts and pages.
It seems that you’ve modified the theme template for Pages in the Site Editor, but these modifications won’t affect any new content you add to an existing page under Pages > All Pages. This is likely why your navigation block isn’t “sticking” – you’re adding it to the Page set as your front page, rather than the Page template in the site editor.
To resolve this, I recommend editing the Page template and adding the block to the content there. This will ensure it shows up correctly. However, please note that this approach will apply the same template to every page on your site, as each new page will use that template.
If you want to retain your current content, you can reset the templates with our assistance, but the existing content will be lost unless you copy it to a new page and save it as a draft. Alternatively, you have the option to choose a different theme that is less complex than Blank Canvas. We can provide guidance in selecting an alternative theme that suits your needs.
I hope this explanation clarifies the situation. Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
