Free to Owned WordPress site

My site is my kids hockey site for their team they play for. I don’t want it to go away when they are done playing in a few years. I want them to be able to have something to look back on. If I buy the site will it go back to free once their hockey is over and I no longer have any reason to pay for it?

I know, it’s a weird question. The only reason I want to buy it is so I can edit CSS. But I’ll no longer have any use for it, (paying for it) after they are done playing in a few years.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

If I buy the site will it go back to free once their hockey is over and I no longer have any reason to pay for it?

Yes, as long as you make sure once you are done using the site for the CSS purposes, that you don’t autorenew the payment for the plan. If you don’t want to renew your domain you can just cancel it and the site will automatically go back to using the original free address.

Hope this helps answer your question :)

Great idea for the site by the way! My son will be starting hockey soon, and I may do this as well

Hi, thank you and thank you for responding as well. Do you know if when a site is purchased, (not the $24.99 per month plan) if Javascript is allowed?

  • Hi there,

Just to clarify, if you use custom CSS as part of Premium, that CSS will be removed when the plan in cancelled. The content on the site won’t be affected, but any Premium features will stop working.

With the Business Plan it is possible to add JavaScript to your site, but what exactly do you want to do? I might not be necessary to achieve what you want.

Hi, thank you for the response @ Kokkieh.

I’d like to embed forum code to have a team talk page where the players can discuss games and parents can discuss travel plans for away games and tournaments, maybe a video gallery, image sliders etc.

I’d also like to be able to do things like add tabs on pages for player bios which use mouse over effects and so forth. I know enough with CSS and HTML to get me by but nowhere near being expert level. Typically if I need help designing something I just go to stack overflow where I find most code I need to do what I’d like. Problem is just about everything is CSS or requires jquery or javascript.

  • Okay, yes, that will not be possible here. On a Business Plan site it should be possible, but for that level of complete control you might be better served with a self-hosted setup instead as we still have some limitations on WordPress.com, the biggest being that you can’t edit your site’s files directly, regardless of plan.

The Business Plan will allow you to add JS into post and page content and widgets, and you can use plugins to inject it into your site’s files, but that can only take you so far. But you’re welcome to give it a try. If you find it doesn’t work you can get a full refund on Business for 30 days. But please note that we won’t be able to help you with any custom code like this via our support channels.

If you want to look into the self-hosted option instead, you can find some more information here:

Thank you for response, I actually used to run several sites. One wordpress, one vBulletin and the other SMF. All self hosted and as you know, all of which had tons of plugins which didn’t require any coding whatsoever. Those were sites I used to make money with Google Ads. They’re long gone now though.

In this case though, I have two sites, both wordpress.com, my primary site which is noted in the OP here. That site is used to keep track of both of my kids hockey teams season stats and game footage. The other site is exclusively my two boys site only which keeps track of their own footage including goals and highlights. I do know I’m limited with the free package but thought if there were ways to incorporate additional features without the need to pay I would try and make use. I actually do this for fun and completely free of charge to the hockey club. I record every one of their hockey games and post them to my youtube channel and make box scores and embed the video on the wordpress site so there is one exclusive place the players, parents and family members can go to watch and get all of the news about each game. I guess I’ll make use of what I have in the free site.

    Thanks for your responses.

  • That sounds like an excellent way to support the club :)

We do support most inline CSS, so you might be able to do some stuff with that on only a free site. Not as cool as the stuff you can do with jquery, but there are some great CSS-only tutorials out there on sites like css-tricks.com if you want to explore the possibilities.

Thank you for the advice and suggestions. I don’t see any inline CSS tricks on the site though. Everything is written in conventional CSS.

  • If you can do something with just regular CSS and HTML, then you should be able to do it using Premium. I should have mentioned that :)
