  I consider the new free site you have just set up IS a free trial. You can experiment with it as much as you like. Upgrading to a paid plan only gives you additional storage space for Media, no ads and a Custom Domain name etc. All useful stuff but not essential immediately whilst you are learning your way around WordPress.com.
