free version, when and where video will appear?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying out a free template/site, using Suburbia as the template. I’m seeing that video links or embed attempts do not appear as visual thumbnails on the front top “summary” page, but do appear in full form when you go into the post. Is this a result inherent in the free version of wordpress, or is this something else?

How could a whole video be displayed in that teeny tiny column unless your reduced the width?

    Suburbia description notes http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/suburbia/
    live demo site http://suburbiademo.wordpress.com/

On the main page, Suburbia doesn’t display regularly inserted images. They only display when a post is viewed on its own page – not on the front page. Only two posts with featured images in them display there side by side.

To have front page image display you need to set a featured image to each post. The size of the featured image does matter. The featured image works best with images at least 350 by 248 (width, height).

If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options

I would expect that result by looking at the appearance of the template and it’s demo. Coding can re-scale/re-place the image for the purpose of the tumbnails, such as it does for the still images I tested. The videos, however, do not have this same experience.

I did look at the WP links you included, and followed through with their information, testing prior to posting this question.

I don’t see the word “videos” in the featured images in support docs or in the theme description. I see only the word “images”. However, did you try resizing the videos to 350 by 248 (width, height)?

yes, that’s right, video isn’t addressed specifically. The image size is a guideline for minimal to average size. However I did try it with a video embedment, and it didn’t work either. It would seem that this is the way this free template is, and it just doesn’t support video as a preview image.

    thanks for your suggestions.

I have used the Suburbia theme and I can attest to the fact that featured image dimensions are critical to their displaying. I don’t believe that “video and “featured image” are synonymous terms in this case. I tagged this thread for a response form Themes Staff. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond which is not likely to happen until next week.

I did try the video embedment with what you suggested, putting it exactly the sizes listed, and it didn’t change the situation. But thanks.

You’re welcome. Then I suggest you try using another theme.

Or include a Jpg thumbnail of the video in each post.

    Hi there,

Unfortunately WordPress does not support featured video thumbnails at this time. I would suggest to grab one of the preview images that are provided by most video hosting sites and use that as a featured image for that post.

For YouTube it would be for example:
    http://img.youtube.com/vi/{VIDEO-ID}/0.jpg

    Best,
    Konstantin
