Free website > domain – can I use a different name in my URL?

  I have a free website with WordPress (WordPress.com). I want to add a domain, and the domain which will have a different name. (e.g. rather than http://www.smithanderscompany.wordpress.com, I want to my domain to be http://www.andersco.com).

  Since I still have a WordPress site and I don’t yet have a URL, can I add this different URL without it screwing up my website?

  You absolutely can do that and it will not mess anything up.

  Your custom domain does not have to have any relation to your ______.wordpress.com domain.
