Free WordPress.com: Admin features very limited; cannot get HTML AdSense code to work; cannot manually HTML code install PayPal button; no plugins?

When I first starting using WordPress.com several years ago, it seemed that it filled all my needs. I took a break from blogging for a couple of years, and now it seems that my site has been severely limited. I cannot input Google Adsense or a PayPal donate button into the HTML, I cannot install Plugins, and it even seems as if my Admin bar of features was reduced. Am I forced to go to a paid service?
If so what is the least costly paid service where I can at least get AdSense and a PayPal Donate Button? It would be also great to have the wide and full-screen website format as well.

There have to be limits on the functions you can expect to receive for free. With a Premium plan you could use WordAds. Adsense would require the Business plan. A basic PayPal button can be added to a free site however.

Thank you so much for the help! I finally managed to input a PayPal button into the HTML.
I know not to expect much for free; however, it seems that I was able to adequately manage my WordPress at a somewhat higher-level a few years ago. Now, it seems purposefully stripped of everything … even the Admin Tool Bar.
And, I’m a good and popular writer, and WordPress has all sorts of ads running on my site and blog postings. They’re making money off of my hard work and years of education; so I am in fact, contributing more to WordPress than taking from them. Just saying …:/

I’ve set up another site this year that isn’t getting many views. So look on the bright side. If your site is popular and WordPress.com is making money off you then you are supporting the continuation of other free less popular sites here. Just saying …:/
