Free wordpress themes

There seems to be an influx of FREE wordpress themes designed by other people which are not available on the wordpress site. These links are coming via WP links on twitter,but people seem to be having a lot of problems uploading them and getting them working properly. Am I able to upload a new theme which has been saved on my computer and encompass my existing blog or are these themes for new bloggers only as I don’t want to loose any stuff?Is it better to create a new blog and transport everything over gradually? Really, thats really misleading then as they have wordpress written all over them? Is WP links on Twitter not affiliated with WordPress then?
