Free WordPress.com theme tip for an author
-
Hi fellow bloggers and volunteers,
looking for a free and great looking free theme which may be changed using the customizer or with CSS. The only requirement is that the colors can be customized to fit the colors on this logo.
The theme of the blog would be a novel, where one posts thoughts, snippets, excerpts from the novel, author’s diary, etc.
Thanks for your suggestions, enjoy the weekend!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there! There are a number of free themes that support a site logo that might fit the bill. Most of them come with free alternate colour schemes in the Customizer that you can experiment with, too. Here are just a couple you might want to check out:
Adaption – https://adaptiondemo.wordpress.com/
Rowling – https://rowlingdemo.wordpress.com/
Lovecraft – https://lovecraftdemo.wordpress.com/
You can also check out all free themes that support the logo feature here:

If you’d like to use Custom CSS you’ll need either the Premium or Business plans.

Thanks, very useful, helped! Additional question, though:
Which would be the budget-conscious and at the same time, with custom css easily customized premium theme for the same purpose I’m looking for?
-
You’re welcome! You might want to search for premium themes by colour, which is how I found those free themes. For example:
https://wordpress.com/design/premium?s=red
https://wordpress.com/design/premium?s=blue
That way you could scan the thumbnail images and prices easily to see if something strikes your fancy.
Whether a theme is easy or hard to customize with CSS probably depends more on your CSS skills. We have a CSS Customization forum if you decide to go that route and need assistance.

@kathrynwp: I decided for the very first template that you mentioned, Adaption, but would like to use this opportunity to ask: what is the difference between free and premium templates, except that one needs to pay for a premium template?
-
-
If so, why are people paying for premium templates if they can have a template for free in the same quality if they search well, or ask the right person? :)
-
It’s a matter of what you need and what theme works best for your site. There are also generally fewer people using premium templates on WordPress.com than free themes, so you’re less likely to spot other people out there using them. Some premium themes have lots of bells and whistles, but so do some free themes. It’s really whatever works best for your needs.
-
Another very important difference between free and premium themes is that, with a premium theme, you will almost always get better documentation and much better support.
When a problem pops up, and you’re using a free theme, the developer of that theme may or may not be interested in helping you. Why? Because you got his theme for free…he hasn’t made any money from you…and he probably has a “Pro” version of the theme, which he is hoping you will buy. If he’s a professional theme designer, he’s running a business, and will devote a lot more time and effort into helping his paying customers.
When using a free theme, you pretty much have to rely on a forum to get answers for your questions…and someone may or may not be able to (or choose to) answer your questions.
But with a premium theme, it’s much more likely that you will get the help you need.
If your time is valuable, a free theme may end up causing you more money in the long run.

Here on WordPress.com, staff provides excellent support for all themes, including all free themes. Any question asked here in the Themes forum will get a reply from WordPress.com staff, and we read all replies answered by volunteers to make sure they’re accurate as well.

WordPress.com users with free themes under the Premium plan also have access to live chat and email support.

All clear now, thank you very much both @kathrynwp for answering just everything and @manfrommars for adding up to the discussion – enjoy the weekend!

@kathrynwp
Thanks for clearing that up for me…regarding the level of support for themes here on WordPress.com. I’ve been using self-hosted WP for years, and only recently getting into the DotCom side here…so I’m gradually building up my understanding of how things work on this end so I can help some people.I really appreciate your help. :)

manfrommars – no worries. There are definitely some differences between the two and it takes a while to get used to them. :)
