Freeing up a domain

Hi, I’ve got a stuck domain name, please can you help?

I was using a custom domain (traceyupchurch.com) on my blog (tupchurchwriting.wordpress.com).
The domain was registered with UK2, so over at UK2 I changed the nameservers to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM (& NS2, NS3).
    All fine.

I’ve now decided to move that blog over to WordPress.org (Dreamhost) exporting content from WordPress.com and importing to WordPress.org. The content exported fine, and Dreamhost linked up to UK2 OK, so I changed the UK2 nameservers to Dreamhost nameservers, and logged in to my WordPress.com dashboard and deleted the traceyupchurch.com domain from the tupchurchwriting.wordpress.com domain upgrade section. The WordPress.com website is now just on its original free url, as expected.

BUT when I tap into traceyupchurch.com, I get an error page saying:

“Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.”
The ‘log in’ is hyperlinked to my WordPress.com dashboard.

I can’t get it to let go of WordPress.com — why? Is this just a delay in DNS changes getting around or should I have done something more to unhook the domain from WordPress.com?

Any advice would be appreciated. :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It can take 24 to 72 hours for changes to reach the far corners of the internet – so if you did things correctly you still have a bit of a wait.

you can also stop or cancel the domain mapping to your blog here – if you have bookmarks and search traffic to the base blog tupchurchwriting.wordpress.com. – think about getting Domain Forwarding for a year to send traffic to your new site – if you have had the custom domain name then probably not much of an issue

Also set the blog tupchurchwriting.wordpress.com. to private to keep search engines out to avoid duplicate content

traceyupchurch.com – sends me to the famous 5 minute install page on your new host – some changes have migrated

Hi thanks, yes, I did set the wp.com blog to private but freed it up again when I posted here.

It’s complicated also, I should say, because the domain used to be on traceyupchurch.wordpress.com and that seems to be where it’s pointing now. (I moved it over to tupchurchwriting.wordpress.com make use of Wordads.)

traceyupchurch.com is now coming up as a linked blog too, in my wordpress.com list of blogs, because I did hook it up to wp.org via UK2 directly for the hour it took for UK2 to break the connection. It seems to have wriggled its way back into WordPress.com.

Ooh, you are going over to the new page? Eek, I’m not.

Usually the blog owner is the LAST person to see everything resolve correctly.

And obviously forgot to set up mx so have also not been getting support emails… (sorted now).

You can try clearing your browser cache and forcing a page reload – once in a while that works – otherwise take a long walk and have a drink of your favorite beverage while you wait

Feeling the love today — I found my domain! Thanks for bearing with me. (And @auxclass, also love your site (we sail), so I’ll enjoy following!)
