Freelance Developer

I am a freelance designer. Some of my client use WordPress and will inevitably ask me to help them with their site. I dont want to have my own WordPress site but I signed up to see if I could learn the backend to save me time in the future. I thought it would be a bit like Squarespace but its not.
Is there any way I can access to learn your backend without having to fake my own site and pay an annual fee for a domain I dont need or want?

  • Hi there,

First of all, WordPress is an open-source software that’s free for anyone to use. So you can download it and install it on your computer or you can install it on a hosting provider of your choice.

WordPress.com, on the other hand, is a hosting provider that specializes in WordPress hosting.

So, if your clients are using the open-source WordPress software you can test it out on your own computer for free:

If they’re hosted with us here on WordPress.com, then you can create a free site and test it out. There’s no need to upgrade to a paid plan:
