Friend cannot access created account, wasn't sent a confirmation email

A friend of mine recently tried to create a WordPress account but ran into the following problem detailed below.
I registered a WordPress site (WordPress.com, definitely not org) this morning as part of a tech workshop. I made sure the email address was correct, the username was how I wanted it, and the password was entered correctly too. I never got a confirmation email at all, not in spam, trash, promotions, archives, nowhere. Despite this, I was able to access the site, make several pages, upload media, and set the page to private viewing. I noticed the person next to me was prevented from making changes until he activated his email but I never got anything like that. I used a borrowed computer from the center, so any info on the computer has since been erased and I wouldn’t have a chance at getting the same one anyways.
When I got home, I tried to log in from my computer, but was told that both my email and username were invalid. This happened both with the password I used and when I tried password recovery. It also happened when I tried to re-send the activation email. However, when I tried to re-register with the same info, it said that my username was unavailable, and when I go to the address, it’s set to private just like I set it up this morning.
Honestly it sounds like some kind of glitch; I find it hard to believe that I’d enter in both an incorrect email and username, especially since the username is now unavailable and has the same privacy settings I gave it.

I have a similar problema. I created a username and email. Then I found out that the username was too long and decided to create a new username (shorter) and email. I was supposed to enter the same email, but I mistyped it, and this email doesn’t exist anywhere. I then tried to change this username to something else to have it available to use it for the first created username, but it says that it is not available, so I’m stuck. I can’t use it, and I can’t change it, and I can’t start again. I need the user name because it is my comercial name. Please, help me.
