Friend has passed away

  A friend has passed away that had a fairly extensive blog on the wordpress.com hosted site. Several of his friends want to make certain that the blog does not go dark.

  Is there a way for us to pay for the blog (if it was indeed a paid blog – which we think it was) to keep it live?

  That appears to be a free site so there does not appear to be any upgrade to pay for.
