From example.wordpress.com to newdomainname.com

Hello internet helpers! I appreciate your help already. :)

I have had my blog, texaninsouthafrica.wordpress.com, for the last two years. Due to the change of my situation (we now live back in the US) I would like to change my domain to a more generic name. I would like to know if the only way I can do that, is by upgrading to a paid platform.

-In the upgrade process, can I choose a new domain.com name?? and lose the ‘.wordpress.com’ of the address?
-Will my ‘old’ domain (www.texaninsouthafrica.wordpress.com) redirect to the newdomain.com name?
-If I choose to not renew the paid platform a year from now, will I lose the newdomain.com name, BUT keep my original, redirected, wordpress.com site and all of my pre-upgrade and post-upgrade material and posts?

    Thank you again!
