You do not need an upgrade of any kind to go here and reduce the number of post on your front page. Settings > Reading
Blog pages show at most __ posts
“Save Changes”Reducing the number of posts appearing on your front page is a very wise move as it reduces page loading time and page loading time is a page ranking factor.
If you wish your can insert “the read more tag” into posts so only beginnings of posts are displayed on your front page followed by a read more link. Your readers can click the link and view the whole post on it’s own page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

I need some help with having an image show up on my various categories. For example, if I am posting a new page, I would like the image to show up in the text box nstead of link. What do I do?

In the majority of themes, posts in category or monthly archive pages show up just as they do in the main posts page. But in some themes only the beginnings of posts are shown, and in a few themes you only get titles or thumbnails.
