Front Page to my blog

Is there a theme I can use for my blog – New Mills – which allows me to use a different front page format to the rest of my blog? What I’m after is a front page display format showcasing what’s ‘inside’ the blog. Any advice?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are some themes that look different on the front page, eg Hemingway or Chaos Theory, or the new ones. But it’s not customizable.

What exactly do you have in mind when you say “showcasing what’s ‘inside’ the blog”?

Maybe a series of boxes that would indicate much of what is currently in my sidebar – so titles like ‘Best in View’, ‘Print’, ‘TLS’, etc. Plus maybe page boxes like ‘Angela Carter’ and ‘Christina Stead’, all of which you could hover over and ‘enter’.

So in essence you’re looking for widget functionality on the main column instead of the sidebar. That’s not directly possible in a wp.com blog. You can simulate it if you set a static page as your front (after switching to a theme in which static pages have, or can be made to have, no sidebar) and use a lot of html coding to create an elaborate design. But in that case you’d have to update the content of each “box” manually each time you add a new post or page or whatever (while widgets do that automatically); I hope you’re not willing to do that!

Intuit Types Theme will highlight your recent posts (you can determine how many) on the front page. It gives a good feel for what’s in your blog. Below the title there’s an introductory box that you can use for text, for a small header, or almost any widget of your choice. Check it out. The front page is different than the post pages, but you can’t put all your widgets there.

    Good luck.

The problem with designs like this is that lots (LOTS) of readers go to the blog to read the stuff, they don’t go to the blog to find pointers to the content. Blogs which do not put out, fully, on the front page, have fewer people reading each post and the blog as a whole. It artificially inflates each post’s stats while actively decreasing your readership.

That hasn’t been my experience so far, but I am keeping an eye out for this.

It hasn’t been my experience either.

I forgot to say that now that I’m accustomed to this format, I dread scrolling down all those long pages of posts on blogs with the conventional format. So much easier to click on an appealing title.

    LOL … I’m with you. :)

All I know is, I get paid to create links to blogs. Blogs that don’t give me the content on the front page are not included in my link lists, because I’m not interested enough to click through. And I had one blog which always had a Read more tag in it; once I dropped it, the readership tripled in two months.
