I don’t remember ever signing up for a free trial that turned later into a paid subscription. I never received any email saying ‘okay, we’re going to start charging you now.’ But somehow I’m being charged annually now. I’ve never used WordPress and canceling my ‘subscription appears complicated, let alone recovering past annual charges. HELP!

Look for any emails from WordPress.com related to your account and subscription. Sometimes important information can be missed or filtered into spam/junk folders.
