Frustration importing site.
-
We host WP in AWS and we are trying to move it here, and I have had nothing but problems. First, can I re-import a site? If so, what did I do wrong?
But first some history.
I tried the initial import with JetPack. If failed. Don’t know why, but it said it failed. It didn’t provide details beyond it failed.
So then, I tried importing the XML export form our site, but then none of the modules were enabled, and some I could not enable. For example, We have Elementor Pro, but it keep telling me we need to resubscribe. Because of that, the Elementor Skin plugin would not work, and several other problems.
So then I SFTP’d the site over, and imported a dump of the MySQL backend. This missed up the user tables, but someone here was able to fix the user table. This finally seemed to work, the modules worked, the page looked good, but… By this point the import was out of date vs the source system in AWS, so I tried re-importing it, but that gave us double menus on the site.
I’ve now restored from backup to the older working version, and now I would like to know how I can update the site with an XML import so the updates to the menus work without doubling menus, and the new posts are added without doubling the old posts? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello! 👋🏼
I assume you tried the “Import Everything” method?
If you have a website built with WordPress on another hosting provider, generally referred to as a self-hosted WordPress.org site, and want to move it to WordPress.com, use our Import Everything option. The Import Everything option will copy your existing self-hosted WordPress site to your new WordPress.com site, including your content, media, plugins, and the theme. Prerequisites A WGiven that this failed, I can suggest considering the “All-in-One WP Migration” plugin, which is made by a 3rd-party developer.
The free version of this plugin can migrate sites which backups are up to 2 GB in size (they provide the unlimited, paid version as well).
Here’s a guide for importing your self-hosted WordPress site to WordPress.com:
If you wish to import an entire WordPress site including plugins, themes, and users, the All-in-One WP Migration plugin can help you achieve that. This option is suitable for self-hosted WordPress.org sites if you have already tried the Import Everything option and did not get the desired result. You can also use the plugin method to import a local/staging site. Prerequisites A WordPreAfter the import, we’ll most likely have to assist with reconnecting the Jetpack, but it’s a quick task.
For example, We have Elementor Pro, but it keep telling me we need to resubscribe. Because of that, the Elementor Skin plugin would not work, and several other problems.
This is most likely caused by the discrepancy in site URL — your original site might have any URL like example.com, and your WordPress.com site (when no domains are connected) has the following URL: myexamplesite.wpcomstaging.com. Given that Elementor Pro checks the domain where the plugin is used, this is why it won’t work.
However, after migrating the site and connecting the domain properly, this will be resolved automatically.
