FSE – Full Site Editing
-
There’s a lot of talk about FSE on DotOrg and absolutely nothing is here. Has it already been implemented on DotCom?
Background I have a self hosted company website. Sick and tired of plugins crashing my site at every upgrade. Hate a the propriotery theme and Elementor. No offence. I am afraid to touch the site even for minor changes, like discounts, rebates, ets. My dream is to move the entire site to Gutenberg and a Twenty theme. I’d gladly move my site here if you already have FSE implemented. Any hope?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi there!
We are working to implement FSE in WordPress.com, although it’s not yet fully here.
If you’d like to try WordPress.com out, feel free to create a free test site. Just make sure you choose a free subdomain (for example ending with .wordpress.com) :). -
Thank you very much for the prompt response.
Do features usually introduced first on .com and then released for self hosted sites, or it is the other way around?
Is there a developers hangout that specialize on .com sites? I don’t have time or skills to move the entire site.
Thanks

Hi there,

Sometimes they’re here first then merged with the general WP. Sometimes WordPress will release features that we merge here.
Is there a developers hangout that specialize on .com sites? I don’t have time or skills to move the entire site.
Great question! Let me dig around a little and I’ll let you know what we find. There is always this Calypso repo as well:

Honestly I’m not finding much yet, but do you want to tell me more about what you have in mind? Like a slack channel, github, or a p2 or a forum? I can at least pass the suggestion along. We do also have http://developer.wordpress.com/ for info for developers, though I wouldn’t really call it a hangout.

I am hoping to move our entier site (cozyworld dot ca) to Gutenberg. No coding. Only a standard theme (one of the Twenties) and standard features of Gutenberg. It appears that, technically speaking, the only challenge would be the home page. The other challenge is the sheer amount of labour required to move all the pages to Gutenberg. I just don’t have all that time.
A little bit of background. I am sick and tired of a proprietary theme, proprietary page builder, proprietary plugins. Things break down even if you don’t touch them. I need to make small changes at least once a week, this is a business after all, and I am afraid to touch.
Anyway, a standard theme with a standard page builder would be a nice combo for me. Even if I have to sacrifice some features. I wouldn’t be afraid to work with the site. I think that was the intent behind creating Gutenberg.
I was hoping to find some freelancers’ hangout on dotcom. “Developers” was not a right choice of word.

Hi there,

Yes, the homepage would need to be built from scratch using the block editor. As for the rest of the content since they were built with a page building plugin I cannot guarantee that the migration process will be easy. Those page-building plugins use their own custom fields and code to render the page. What I’ve seen in the past with similar situations is that the content (text, images, etc.) carries over and then you need to work on the layout (using the Block editor).
I was hoping to find some freelancers’ hangout on dotcom. “Developers” was not a right choice of word.
I’m not aware of such a community. However, this is a great idea! I’ll further discuss this with the rest of team and I’ll update you here.

Rereading this, are you actually looking for a developer to manage the migration for you? If so, we currently recommend this resource.
We like the idea of having a developers/freelancer hangout for WordPress.com though too! If we get that up and going, we’ll let you know.

I went to the recommended site. They connected me to a developer. After a discussion about the details of the project, I liked the guy and was ready to proceed with the payment. That’s where I got cold feet.
In the Checkout page it says: “By continuing, you are agreeing to the secure storing of your card details for future use. ”
And in the Terms page it says: ” As per our policy, we cannot process your payment before you agree to such storing. ”Wow, basically, my way or highway. With credit cards info being stolen every day in millions, why would I want to keep it with them even after a one off transaction. Kind of makes me feel uneasy.
-
Sorry to hear it! We wouldn’t recommend them if we felt they were unsafe, though, so you might check in with them to see what more they need to store it for, and how you can have it removed when you’re ready.

It appears that everybody else does the same by default without even asking a customer’s permission. Maybe because this company is in Europe, this courtesy to customers is mandated by law. Anyway, I went ahead with this company.

Just to complete this thread.
I went with the recommended company – Codeable. The entire experience was 10 out of 10 on all counts.
Thanks a lot.
