FSE Questions

I just found out about FSE recently and I have quite a few questions.

I have been a long time user on wordpress.com since 2014, and I love the Colinear template. It’s the only template I use on all of my most active .com’s and free blogs I have on this platform. I have found no other template here that works so simply and beautifully in terms of it’s simplicity while being able to expand in it’s structure at the click of a button as needed (left or right column, 2 columns on either side, etc).

    My questions are:

(1.) Will I continue to be able to use this template, or am I going to be forced to choose a new template which will require a ton of work to reformat all of my websites?

(2.) Once FSE rolls out, will that be available to the Colinear template? Note – I don’t want to change the template as I like it the way it is, but I’m curious if it’s rolling out to the older templates such as Colinear in the future to prevent deprecation of the template, and other older templates?

(3.) If the Colinear template will be removed because of FSE, will there be a comparable template available for FSE?

(4.) It is my understanding that FSE will allow you to basically edit an existing template, or create one from scratch. With that said, in terms of wordpress.com’s paid plan structure, what is wordpress.com’s planning in terms of it’s pricing and plan features. With FSE for example, you would no longer need to upgrade to the Business plan just to be able to upload a template since you can create one with FSE.

To further comment: I’m glad to see WordPress progressing into this “all in one” type structure, however it leaves me concerned due to the fact that with all of the work being done on this block structuring, nothing is being told to us that I can find on the WordPress blog about how this huge change is really going to effect us who have grown accustomed to using the older templates. There’s a reason we’re still using templates such as Colinear. It’s because it just works, and they don’t need to be changed, but I know that’s just my opinion on that.

Thanks for checking my questions and I appreciate your help on this topic.

  • Hi there!

Let me try and address all your concerns.

(1.) Will I continue to be able to use this template, or am I going to be forced to choose a new template which will require a ton of work to reformat all of my websites?

Yes, you can keep using your current theme; no need to redo your site if you don’t want to.

(2.) Once FSE rolls out, will that be available to the Colinear template? Note – I don’t want to change the template as I like it the way it is, but I’m curious if it’s rolling out to the older templates such as Colinear in the future to prevent deprecation of the template, and other older templates?

While I don’t have an exact answer to this question, I think it’s safe to say that the focus will be on creating new FSE-compatible themes rather than updating existing, older themes.

(3.) If the Colinear template will be removed because of FSE, will there be a comparable template available for FSE?

Even if the theme is deprecated, you will still be able to use it on your site. It won’t be automatically removed from your site.
I can’t really advise if there will be a similar FSE-ready theme in the future. The design trends are ever-changing, and our team creates new themes preparing them to work well with the latest software and different devices.

You’d still need a theme, but yeah, you’d be able to personalize each page template to make it more custom, which could decrease the need for looking outside of the WordPress.com themes’ library.
The themes are still limiting where certain elements (e.g., header, logo, menu) would go on the page, so it’s not like you can create a custom theme from scratch with it.

Thank you so much for the feedback. If you have any other questions, let us know.

Thank you very much. This is good information. I was trying to create a new test blog so I can try out the FSE, but apparently the beta for it hasn’t rolled out to everyone… or maybe I didn’t choose a template that is compatible with that. I’ll try again soon.
