FSE Themes and Customizer
-
Howdy!
I’m working with the Arbutus theme on my FSE test site and suddenly the Customizer has appeared under Appearance.
Has the Customizer now been extended to all FSE themes with the Site Editor as an option?
TIA for any insight

Hi there,
Is this on http://demosite202204.wordpress.com/?
As far as I know the Customizer should be available on all WordPress.com sites, even if you’re using a block theme. Unless I’ve been seeing something different from you as a staff member the past couple of months :D
The Customizer is not available on block themes on self-hosted sites, but there it can be added back by using the Jetpack plugin (or, I’m assuming, any plugin that relies on the Customizer for some of its settings). I don’t know if there are plans to add the Customizer back in Core, though you should still be able to reach it by going directly to
/wp-admin/customize.php, even if it’s no longer listed in the WP-Admin menu. -
Hi @kokkieh – yes, it is on demosite202204.
Is this a more recent addition to FSE themes then? Because I remember at one point after FSE was introduced we were sharing that wp-admin/customize link with users
This is what I see today if I open the Customizer on my test site (temp screenshot) which I’m pretty sure wasn’t there before.
I’ll see if I can find the thread where I played “what theme is this? Hybrid, universal, fse”. Might have been elsewhere.
aside 2¢/the header of the theme showcase page (while logged out) changed significantly and no longer has those greatly helpful links to make themes more discoverable, like magazine, wedding, photography, etc. Granted one can get there through the “subject” filter, but that’s another click and maybe not so obvious if you don’t know about it./aside 2¢

Hi folks, I want to come back to this topic for clarity’s sake.
I couldn’t find my discussion (maybe elsewhere), but found this reply from Staff back in February
New Block Theme sites will not have the customizer while
new Universal themes will have the Customizer. Also, sites that did have the customizer from a Universal theme will still have it when switching to a Block theme.Given what @kokkieh advised earlier in this thread, is that still the case now or do all currently available themes (Hybrid, universal, fse, classic) have access to the Customizer? (temp screenshot reuploaded)
Thanks for any insight shared.

Hi there,
Based on a quick check of themes on my test site yes that seems to be the case. The customizer is available (even for purely block-based themes) though with limited options. Our understanding at the time of launch was that not all themes would have this, but in practice there are a few features that can only be found in the customizer (such as fonts, or CSS on upgraded sites) and until those are fully integrated into the FSE site editor, it’s necessary to have a customizer to access them.
It’s likely this may change over time as features that were in the customizer become integrated into the FSE site editor, and this may vary from theme to theme. I’m afraid we don’t have any more detail at this time however.
If I can ask, you have a concern of some kind? Or just generally curious about why you still see the customizer? Happy to answer any related questions you have, thanks.

Hi Jerry, yes, it was curiosity specifically concerning FSE themes, given Darnell’s somewhat recent reply and a discussion we had. Everything is clear now. Thank you both.
