full backup files for wordpress.org migration
-
hi! we exported the xml from our soaklifestyle.com domain to transfer on bluehost and wordpress.org. bluehost is telling us that the 5.06MB xml file cannot be extracted and won’t work properly. can you send the full backup website file in zip form? in case you need my email it is (email visible only to moderators and staff)

Just to clarify, are you following the instructions here to move your site (particularly in Step 4, importing the file into your new site):
You should not need Bluehost support to do anything for you as far as importing/extracting. You should be able to do that yourself once you have your new WordPress install set up on Bluehost.
Let us know if anything is unclear or you have any further questions.

Yep we followed the migration process and still need to get the back WordPress back up file. We contacted WordPress.org and Bluehost and you guys to get info. We need to have access to the backup file for our website that you have up to a month

We do not provide full-site backups on WordPress.com. WordPress.com uses a modified version of the open source WordPress software, so even if we could provide you with a full site backup, it would be incompatible with the version of WordPress you’re using at Bluehost.
The only export option we have is to export your site content only as a .xml file from My Site ->Tools ->Export.
That file is meant to be imported using the WordPress import plugin, and cannot be uploaded directly to the server by your host. In other words, first complete your WordPress installation at Bluehost. Then log into WP-Admin using the credentials they’ll provide to you. Go to Tools ->Import and install the WordPress importer plugin, and then use that to upload your file.
For more help with this process you can ask the WordPress.org community for advice at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/, as they provide support for the version of WordPress you’ll be using at Bluehost.
I see your site with us used to be on our Business Plan and using plugins, but it hasn’t been properly downgraded to our free plan and is no longer connected to a domain. If you’ve been following the process I described above and that doesn’t work, it’s most likely because the site hasn’t been properly downgraded.
If so, we can downgrade the site for you, after which you can do a new export. But this carries a risk that the very content you’re trying to export could be wiped out entirely. We try to prevent that, but in rare cases that’s unavoidable, so I need you to confirm before we can start that process.

I don’t think that will be necessary. I think our problem right now is that we have all our written content and posts that migrated successfully, but most of our media (photos) did not import into wordpress.org. We have all our media library on wordpress.com.
We don’t think we can manually upload the photos because we have way too much content and it will be time consuming. Is there another way we could successfully migrate our media from wordpress .com to wordpress .org?

Have you exported the content while the site was using the custom domain? If so, this might be what’s causing the issue. The XML file only contains links to where your images are stored in the media library so, if the links were directing to the custom domain, they will not work.
Try exporting the media files again now that the domain is disconnected. -
I’ve tried exported the media files again after our domain was disconnected but still fails to import many media files.
-
Media files are only transferred through the importer if they are attached to posts/pages.
For the rest, those will need to be manually uploaded to the server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these).
-
Could we export our media library in a .tar format so we can directly import into our host.
-
Yes, you can. Go to your export page (https://soaklive.wpcomstaging.com/wp-admin/export.php), select “Media”, and click on “Download Export File”. Your media library will be downloaded as a .tar archive.

Oh, you’re correct.
Since the Business plan was not completely removed from your site though, you should still be able to download the full backup of your site directly from this link. You can also get there manually from My Site -> Jetpack -> Backups.
The backup will contain a full wp-content folder and all database files which you should be able to import from your self-hosted site by installing Jetpack or extracting the files you want.Let me know if that works.

I’ve tried to download the backup but it shows up “The activity referenced by 1602106387.976 is not rewindable”. Should I click on “Restore to This Point” or should I not?
-
We’ve temporarily added the Business Plan back to your site. Can you try downloading that backup now?
-
Hi, we were able to download the backup files and upload the the files manually through a FTP, but our photos are not attaching to our posts. Is there a way to fix this?
-
Did you upload only the images, or the full backup? You’ll need to do the latter.
If you just upload the image files themselves to the library, they won’t attach to the images, as they’ll be uploaded to the library with brand new media file URLs which don’t match the URLs they’re referenced by in your posts.
So you’ll need to completely upload the entire backup from scratch onto your server.
Please contact your hosting provider directly for help with that part. You can also ask the WordPress.org community for advice at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/, as they’re the people who provide support for the version of WordPress you’re using now.
WordPress.com does not work exactly the same as the open source version of WordPress, and we have no control over your new site as it’s not on our servers, so we can’t really help beyond the first step of getting your content off of WordPress.com.
