Full List of Catagoires missing in new editor.

I have enabled the ‘new text editor’ on my blogs, however, as I’m toying around with it I find that I cannot access my full list of categories, of which I have accumulated quite a few over the years. I never really did ‘parent categories,’ it wasn’t always applicable so you can imagine my categories list. That said, I can see all my categories in the administrative view (53 pages worth) but I can only access the ‘a’s’ in the text editor, when I go to add a new one, it uses this short list, or recognizes this short list as ‘parent categories,’ when they are not. How can I get full access to all my categories?

Interestingly enough, the ‘tags’ has no list at all. One simply adds a ‘new tag,’ which is pretty much what I always did anyway, they system always simply seemed to overwrite existing tags. So I do not have a problem with tags, only the categories.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Thanks @charlzcoakley. If you start typing the category name in a search box, does it not come up?

With tags, too, if you start typing a tag it should show you a list of matches.

I should probably experimnent with it a little more, but no.

When I do a search, if it is not one of the first 100 categoriess that show in the visible list, it will not pull it up. If I try to save anything other than what is showing in the list, the editor treats the first 100 categories as parent categories. That is to say–the editor recognizes my firs 100 categories as parent categores and doens’t recognize any of my other categories except to try to add them, or any others I might create, as sub-ccategories.

As far as the tags are concerned, it appears to create as list as you add them, but there is no visible list of “most used” or existing tags to choose from

In the very least, the new editor should recognize all tags & all categoris in the same way the old editor does, or those of us who have been blogging at WordPress for years and have created hundreds of catagories & tags are going to left with one huge mess, but more so when it comes to categores.

I switched back to the old editor until soneone can sort this out. I can’t make it work on this particular blog; I don’t have so many tags & categories on my other two blogs, but the theme is to broad on this particular one to make it work.

And really, I don’t think it’s to much to ask that the new editor at least recognize categoies & tags in the same way the old editor does.

in the same way the old edtor does.

  • Hi there,

This is a known issue and has already been reported to our developers. You can follow along in https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/28536 if you want, but we’ll also update you here once this is fixed.

    Thank you.

I simply did what was easiest–I made categoires, I didn’t really realize I was making parent categoires. Hence, I have hundreds of “parent catagoires” that the new editor isn’t recognizing.

I hope they get it fixed.

    Thank you.

  • charlzcoakley – I’d suggest following the github link with your email so you can get updates and progress reports.

    Okay, thank you.

I’m sure they will get it sorted out before WP does a final release. It’s the only problem I noticed/had with the program, and I suppose that is why, and that it’s probably reccomended, we try these things out before they become permanent fixture.

    I know that’s why I did.

  • The issue with the missing categories should be fixed now. Please let us know if you still see any problems there.

It seems to be working for me as well. I can access all my catagories.
    Thank you.

I may need to make a different post, but I will put this here for now:

Two things I’ve noticed about the category menu, now that I can access all of my catagories–

One. That “uncatagorized” category is not checked by defaulot, thank god. Why that was ever like that I’ll never know and I’m so happy that I don’t have to uncheck it everytime I make a post. So that’s a plus.

    However–

Two. As I go back in to edit a post, I notice that the categories of which I actually have the post in aren’t shown in the menu.

At first I thought–okay, that’s kind of handy & cool, just that fewer categories I have to scroll through–but on second thought–how am I to remove a post from a category when I go in to edit it and the category isn’t showing?

So that is not so cool.

  • Could you get a screenshot of that, @charlzcoakley? On my test, when I put it in a category then go back to edit, that category shows up at the top of the category list.

Ah, mine do too. I see that now. I didn’t notice it before. I simply started scrolling. Thank you.

  • You bet. I’ll go ahead and close this topic, but if you run into any other issues, feel free to start a new thread and add a “modlook” tag to find staff if needed. Cheers!
